New York Cosmos B fought hard in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match against the Brooklyn Italians on Sunday night, but the side fell, 3-2.

Brooklyn opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Giuseppe Barone, but the lead would last just five minutes. Bledi Bardic latched onto a long ball from Chris Wingert before rounding the goalkeeper and sending his shot into an empty net for the equalizer.

The Italians would again take the lead in the 58th minute when Rasmus Hansen found the back of the net, but Cosmos B equalized a minute later through Wojciech Wojcik.

Cosmos B came close to taking the lead on several occasions as John Neeskens hit the cross bar and then Bardic hit the post in the 76th minute.

It would be Brooklyn, though, that would convert the crucial go-ahead goal. Hansen found space on the right flank before cutting in and firing past Macklin Robinson for his second of the night with five minutes to play.

Brooklyn now moves on in the competition and faces Lansdowne Bhoys on Wednesday.

Cosmos B’s next scheduled match is against the Italians on May 15 at the Hofstra University soccer field.
