The last time the New York Cosmos played for a league title, team owner Rocco B. Commisso did not attend the match.
He was absent from the 2-0 loss at the San Francisco Deltas in the 2017 North American Soccer League Championship game.
"That was phenomenal in itself because we did not have the strong season we had this year," he said about the Cosmos reaching the final. “But we made it... That was probably the reason why the team lost. I didn't go to San Francisco."
Of course, Commisso was just joking about not attending that final.
The Cosmos have enjoyed great success whenever Commisso attends games over the past three years and he said that he plans to attend the National Premier Soccer League Championship match between the Cosmos and Miami FC at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y., on Saturday at 7 p.m.
"Absolutely," he said. "And we're home. We don't have to go to San Francisco."
Last Saturday night, Commisso watched his Cosmos defeat ASC San Diego in the national semifinal match, 2-0, at Mitchel.
Needless to say, he was proud of the team effort.
"I think the guys, they certainly deserve my respect, my love," he said. "They love to see me and I came here to watch them."
Commisso liked what he saw from his team. David Diosa scored the first goal and was fouled later in the box in the second half to set up Junior Burgos’ penalty kick.
When asked about how the Cosmos performed, he answered, "Phenomenal, phenomenal. You always worry on what's going to happen. Here, the final result is important. If we lose here, we go home. ... We were the better team."
Commiso met with the team prior to kickoff.
"I didn't have to say anything to these guys," he said. "These guys have a true love of soccer, love of the club, love the coach. This is what this team is all about. They gave the full expression of being part of the Cosmos family. I understand they have been calling this a family affair and it’s true."
