The long-awaited return of Juan Arango to Cosmos Country was realized today when the midfielder arrived in New York, greeting his teammates and the team's coaching staff at the team’s training facility. Held up due to political unrest in his native country, the Venezuelan playmaker finally arrived to New York, ahead of the Cosmos’ trip to North Carolina. Cosmos fans may have the opportunity to witness Arango’s 2017 home debut at MCU Park next Saturday, September 3rd, when the Cosmos host Jacksonville Armada at 7:30 pm.
Arango quickly became a fan favorite in 2016, scoring 15 goals and providing the assist on another 7 goals in 29 appearances. The free kick specialist scored five of his patented “Arangolazos” on set pieces, earning the 2016 NASL Golden Ball as the league’s most valuable player, helping the Cosmos repeat as NASL Champions to claim their record 8th league title.
The native of Maracay, Venezuela scored 23 goals in 127 appearances for the Venezuelan National Team, both records. With experience in Spain’s La Liga (Mallorca), Germany’s Bundesliga (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Mexico’s Liga MX (Monterrey, Pachuca, Puebla, and Tijuana), Arango is one of the most experienced international veterans in North American soccer. Most recently with his boyhood club, Zulia FC, Arango’s return to the Cosmos’ midfield may be the final piece to Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese’s puzzle as he seeks an unprecedented NASL title three-peat. The Cosmos are currently 5th on the Fall Season standings and 3rd in the Combined Standings for the 2017 NASL Season.
