The New York Cosmos announced today that center back, Dejan Jaković, has agreed to a contract renewal with the team.
“We are happy to re-sign Dejan,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director, Giovanni Savarese. “He has been one of our most consistent performers and brings tremendous experience to the squad.”
Since joining the Cosmos in March 2017, Jaković has started nine out of nine games, logging 810 minutes. The Canada native tallied an assist in New York's 4-3 win over Puerto Rico FC on May 14, setting up Ryan Richter's goal in the 50th minute. Jaković has been a pillar in the Cosmos back line, earning two NASL Team of the Week nods so far this season.
The defender began his professional career in Canada, playing for the Canadian Lions in 2007 before spending the 2008-09 season at Red Star Belgrade in Serbia. He then joined MLS side, D.C. United, making 98 regular-season appearances and helping the team lift the 2013 U.S. Open Cup Trophy. Jaković spent the next three years in Japan, featuring for Shimizu S-Pulse in the J2 League. He played 42 games for S-Pulse, helping the team earn promotion to the top tier at the end of the 2016 season.
Jaković has been capped 35 times for Canada, representing his country at the 2009 and 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He has appeared in five 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying games. Most recently, the defender was called up for Canada's 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign.
“I’m excited to continue with the New York Cosmos,” said Jaković. "The players and coaching staff are continuously working on improving the infield product and one can only feel pleased to be part of such progress."
The Cosmos will return to MCU Park on Tuesday, July 4 at 7:30 pm, when they host the Indy Eleven. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, click here.
