The New York Cosmos honored two players on Saturday when the team hosted the San Francisco Deltas at MCU Park. Danny Szetela and Jimmy Maurer recently reached 100 matches for the club, being part of small group of Cosmos players. The midfielder and goalkeeper accompany teammates Carlos Mendes and Ayoze, who hit the 100-mark last season.
The players were presented with a special jersey featuring 100 on the back in front of the faithful Cosmos supporters. Each walked onto the field alongside their families, as the stadium applauded them.
Maurer signed with the Cosmos on April 26, 2013, while Szetela joined on July 1, 2013 as the two players were part of three championship teams over the past four years. Each have been pivotal in the club’s recent success, and show pride every time they put on the Cosmos uniform.
“For me it’s always about representing the club in the best way,” said Szetela. “The Cosmos’ crest is one of the most important in U.S. soccer and it's important for every player to represent it the best they can.”
Playing 100 matches for a single club is rare today, and Maurer is extremely proud of this milestone. “I am very thankful and honored to reach this achievement and appreciate everyone inside and outside the organization who cheered for me along the way,” said Maurer. “I hope to create many more memories this year and in the future.”
The two players have built lasting memories in New York, including a special bond with the fans. One of Maurer’s greatest memory was being named the 2015 Player of the Year by the 5 Points supporters group. “Having the fans sing my name and cheering no matter the score has been incredible and I will always treasure the award given by the 5 Points.”
The Cosmos supporters shared a special moment with Szetela, as he proposed to his fiancé last season on the field. The midfielder had the help of the 5 Points, who held up a sign which read, ‘Will you marry me?’
“I am very close with the fans and appreciate their loyalty, always being there for me and the team,” said Szetela. “Getting engaged after the game was a something I really wanted to do and happy to have them be part of that special moment.”
Hard work, along with many hours training for each match provided the two players with a great appreciation and development as players. While reaching 100 matches is a major accomplishment, Maurer acknowledges the growth that comes with playing with a single club for an extended period of time.
“Since 2013, I have been able to get a lot of games under my belt and grew at each game,” said Maurer. “It’s more than just a number on the stat sheet, I’ve really changed as a player with my understanding of moments and each season helped me grow individually and brought me where I am today.”
Szetela and Maurer truly exemplify what it means to be a Cosmos player, giving everything they have for the club. Each of these two phenomenal athletes have plenty more left, hoping to reach another 100 matches with the club.
