Cosmos supporters are leaving their mark off the pitch

The New York Cosmos home opener was filled with plenty of passion around MCU Park, as the recognized supporters group, The 5 Points, chanted throughout the match. The fanatics are made up of La Banda del Cosmos, the Cross Island Crew and Katralokos.
The fan base were established in August, 2013, while the name goes back to the 1920s when the city of New York saw a huge influx of immigrants from around the world. The 5 Points was an international section in lower Manhattan open to everyone, and keeping with the Cosmos identity, the supporters adopted this name, being an all inclusive group regardless of one's religion or background. The fans looked to emulate the player's diversity and mixed nationalities on the pitch, preserving the Cosmos ideology.
The home opener at MCU Park provided The 5 Points with a new stage to express themselves. Smoke grenades, large banners, and motivational songs were seen and heard amongst the fans at the match, and despite the loss, the chants continued the entire 90 minutes. A member of The 5 Points leadership spoke about the amazing fans, and believes they are one of the best supporter group in North America. They stated win or lose, we do not stop chanting, instead we get crazier and rowdier.
The Cosmos’ players also appreciate the fans cheering behind them, keeping them motivated throughout the match. Juan Guerra, joined the club this season and has already shown love to The 5 Points, thanking the fans for their support.
“I think the support was great, before, during and after the match,” said Guerra. “Sometimes when you're losing, the crowd becomes silent, but even though we were down on the scoresheet they never stopped supporting us, which makes us want to play better for them.”
The 5 Points are always looking for more faithful fans to get involved, as they congregate together at Ruby’s Bar & Grill before the match and collaborate for away matches, meeting at designated viewing spots. The only rule of The 5 Points is to wear Cosmos gear.
If the home opener was any indication of what’s to come in the future from the supporters, then we should all be in for a show, as the fans will do everything in their power to propel the current NASL champions.
The next home match takes place on Saturday, April 22 at 7:00 pm, when they host Jacksonville Armada FC. Tickets are on sale now, for more information click here.
