Long Island's own Carlos Mendes Returns Home to Play for New York Cosmos

The New York Cosmos announced today the signing of Long Island-native Carlos Mendes. Mendes was born and raised in Mineola, long Island--he currently resides in East Meadow--and played youth soccer for the Mineola Portuguese Soccer Club. He attended The Wheatley School in Old Westbury, the alma mater of Cosmos legend Shep Messing.

When a 10 year old Gio Savarese met Pele

Growing up a soccer crazy kid in Venezuela, ten-year-old Gio Savarese got the opportunity of a lifetime when he was invited in 1981 to attend the Pelé Soccer Camp in New York City. At the time, the young Savarese knew he wanted to be a professional soccer player but little did he know, this trip to New York would take him to the stadium where he would achieve legendary status as a player and to see the team that he would eventually manage.

Gio Savarese Named New York Cosmos Head Coach

The New York Cosmos today named Giovanni “Gio” Savarese head coach, it was announced by club COO Erik Stover. Savarese most recently served as director of the Cosmos Academy and manager of the Cosmos U-23 team that played in the USL Premier Development League. Savarese also is a soccer commentator on ESPN Deportes.

Erik Stover Named COO of New York Cosmos

The New York Cosmos today named Erik Stover as the club’s Chief Operating Officer, responsible for all facets of the operation on and off the field. Stover is a 16-year veteran of the sports and entertainment industry having held senior management positions with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (Giants Stadium and IZOD Center) and Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. Most recently, he was the Managing Director of Red Bull New York, a flagship team in Major League Soccer.

The Cosmos Would Like to Extend our Condolences to the Markovic Family

The Cosmos would like to send our condolences to academy coach, Cesar Markovic, and his family after the passing of his father, Miodrag Markovic. Markovic was born in Montenegro in 1932. He played professionally in the former Yugoslavia as well as in Bolivia. He coached professional teams in Bolivia, Ecuador along with clubs in the United States. In the U.S., Markovic coached Ukranian Nationals, Eintracht, Dalmatinac, Brooklyn Italians, and Philadelphia in the American Soccer League and was considered one of the best coaches of his time.
