Pelé Named Honorary Ambassador For The 2014 World Cup In Brazil

July 28th, 2011 - The honorary president of the New York Cosmos and three-time winner of the World Cup (1958, 1962, 1970) with Brazil, Pelé, has accepted an invitation from Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to be an honorary ambassador for the 2014 World Cup, which will be held in Brazil.

Having another opportunity to represent his country and help the image of Brazil in another World Cup was an offer Pelé could not refuse. He said, "from the first World Cup that I played in I've been doing this: I defend and promote Brazil. It's a very big responsibility and I could not turn down the invitation."

Sports Minister Orlando Silva believes Pelé was an ideal choice because of "all he had done for sport in Brazil" and mentioned, "he's a man who knows a lot about the world of football. He's going to help and represent us."

The New York Cosmos congratulate Pelé in receiving this prestigious honor.
