Míchel Salgado Shares His Connection With The Cosmos

August 5th, 2011 - Míchel Salgado is one of the world class players to represent the New York Cosmos against Manchester United on August 5th at Old Trafford (Fox Soccer, 2:30 PM ET). We were able to catch up with Michel ahead of the massive match at Old Trafford and talk with the Spaniard about what wearing the Cosmos jersey means to him...

New York Cosmos: What do you think about the names behind The New York Cosmos?

Míchel Salgado: These are guys that used to be my idols to be honest. When I was a kid, my dad was a big fan of the Cosmos and they had massive players, so I remember watching Pelé games and Brazil games when I was young.

NYC: So what do you remember about the Cosmos or what have you heard about them from your dad?

MS: To be honest, everything. I remember the huge Cosmos stadium being full and I think it was a huge moment for soccer in the USA. It’s not easy to be that popular with basketball and American football, so I remember that. And then of course I remember the great players like Beckenbauer and Pelé.

NYC: What does it mean to you to put on the Cosmos jersey? I know you’ve worn the Real Madrid jersey, but is this special as well?

MS: It’s another honor. It’s another great thing for me. I’m privileged and I’m grateful to be here. It’s such a special team in the history of football. And now I can tell my kids that I played for the Cosmos this one time, you know?

NYC: And with Pelé, Cantona on the bench…

MS: Yeah, it’s even more special. Sharing with them, having a connection with them, learning from them. They’re two top men in football. I’m excited for that.

NYC: Were you a little in awe when you first met them?

MS: Yeah, because I told you that I was a kid and I used to always watch Pelé. So it’s weird, but still fantastic. In a full stadium, being alongside Pelé, it will be a great moment for me.
