Cosmos Academy Update: 6/22

June 22nd 2011 – Here is a collection of midweek stories and updates from the New York Cosmos Developmental Program.

New York Cosmos U-23s

Long Island Rough Riders 4-0 New York Cosmos U23′s

The New York Cosmos U23′s faced the stiffest challenge of their Premier Development League (PDL) exhibition schedule. The team was missing several of their veteran players such as Chad Calderone and Mike Grella and faced an experienced and well-drilled Rough Riders team that has yet to lose this season. This young Cosmos team played well in the first half as the Rough Riders had a tough time figuring them out but were unlucky to concede a 44th minute penalty. The Rough Riders dispatched the spot kick at the stroke of half time to put the Cosmos U23s behind a goal going into halftime for the second match in a row.

In the second half, Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese experimented with his lineup and played more academy players including Ibrahim Diaby, Armando Gaitan and 16-year-old Alex Muyl. The Cosmos were able to keep their shape and stay true to their philosophy of passing soccer, however were undone by the clinical finishing of the Rough Riders.

PLEASE NOTE: The 6/22 PDL match against FC New York has been cancelled. We will be attempting to reschedule this match. Please check www.nycosmos.com for updates.
