NEW YORK – In a an event at Manhattan restaurant Favela Cubana, the teams hoping to qualify for Cosmos Copa 2013 learned who they’ll have to beat to get to the main tournament.

36 nations to be represented at international soccer tourney in five boroughs The New York Cosmos announced today that the grassroots tournament Cosmos Copa will return for its fifth anniversary this July in New York City. The NASL team also officially announced the 36 participating teams.

NYC Haiti defeated two-time defending Cosmos Copa champions, NYC Poland, 2-1 in a rousing display to claim their first ever Cosmos Copa title.   The first half was a telling opening 45 minutes as NYC Haiti came flying out of the gate and took the game to Poland. Haiti dominated possession and displayed their physical prowess, especially during aerial, 50/50 balls.  

NYC Poland 1-1 NYC Senegal (6-5 pens) In one of the most thrilling matches in the highest of stakes so far at Cosmos Copa, Poland continued their dominance of the tournament to advance to the 2012 Final, but not before quite a few scares from a dangerous Senegal team that did just about everything it could to avenge last year’s loss in the Final.
