Flashback Video: New York Cosmos vs. Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the 1977 Playoffs

On Aug. 14, 1977, the New York Cosmos met the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the Division Championship of the North American Soccer League playoffs. A NASL record 77,691 fans were in attendance to see the Cosmos defeat the Strikers 8-3 in the first game of the series.

Rivalry Renewed: Cosmos v Strikers

When the Cosmos return to league play on Aug. 3, they will face a familiar foe at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium. The Strikers were born in 1977 and they had many memorable contests playing in their famous red and gold hoops against the Cosmos before the franchise left Ft. Lauderdale after the 1983 NASL season. “We always had good competition against Ft. Lauderdale,” legendary Cosmos defender Werner Roth said. “It was always a special game.”

Blackout Launch Party

July 14th, 2011 - The New York Cosmos x Umbro Blackout launch party was all in homage to the Blackout that took place in New York City on July 13th, 1977. The Cosmos connection with the event is that Carlos Alberto Torres' first night in the city was the night of the blackout. Thankfully, Carlos still signed a contract with the Cosmos that night despite the surrounding conditions. And the rest is history.

Esteban Rodriguez Scores Goal in US U-17 National Team Win

February 14, 2011 -- Cosmos Academy West player, Esteban Rodriguez, scored a goal that helped take the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team to a 3-1 win against Cuba in their opening group match of the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Jamaica. Alfred Koroma opened the scoring and Esteban Rodriguez (Cosmos Academy West) added a third as the U.S. improved their unbeaten record against Cuba in U-17 qualifying to 4-0-2 lifetime.
