An Auspicious Start Against the Stars

By Dr. David Kilpatrick The New York Cosmos played their first competitive match in the North American Soccer League against the St. Louis Stars at Busch Stadium on April 17, 1971.  In anticipation, Clive Toye, then Vice President and General Manager of the Cosmos, said it would be “the most important soccer match any New York team has ever played.”

On February 4th, 1971, the newest NASL team from New York City chose "Cosmos" for its nickname. At the time, the club announced that it had held a "name the team" contest and that is where the name "Cosmos" came from, but as the club's first general manager explained to club historian, Dr. David Kilpatrick, what really happened is far more interesting.
